Technique Basics –
Time: 2:00pm-4:00pm / Cost: $10.00 per paddler / Clinic Capacity: 20
Join us for an Outrigger Canoe Paddling Clinic tailored specifically for beginner paddlers, led by the experienced and passionate coach, Eric Mitchell. This 2-hour clinic is designed to introduce newcomers to the fundamentals of outrigger canoeing while emphasizing the importance of proper technique to ensure a safe and enjoyable paddling experience.
Under Coach Eric’s expert guidance, participants will start with a brief onshore introduction to outrigger canoe terminology, parts of the canoe, and essential safety protocols. Once on the water, Eric will break down the basic paddling stroke, including how to hold the paddle correctly, body positioning for optimal power and efficiency, and the rhythm necessary for smooth paddling.
The session will also cover essential teamwork skills, as paddling an outrigger canoe requires synchronized effort and communication among crew members.

Steering Basics –
Time: 4:30pm-6:30pm / Cost: $10.00 per paddler / Clinic Capacity: 20
Advance your outrigger canoeing skills with our specialized 2-hour Paddling Clinic focused exclusively on steering, guided by the knowledgeable and dedicated coach, Eric Mitchell. This clinic is designed for paddlers who are ready to take on the crucial role of a steersperson, ensuring you master the art of directing and controlling the canoe with confidence and precision.
Under Eric’s expert instruction, participants will begin with an essential review of the responsibilities and techniques unique to steering. The onshore briefing will cover topics such as understanding the mechanics of the outrigger canoe, positions, and the interplay between the paddlers and the steersperson.
Once on the water, Coach Eric will delve into key steering techniques as well as how to effectively use the paddle to correct and maintain the canoe’s course. You’ll learn how to anticipate and respond to various water conditions and wind directions to ensure steady navigation.
Eric will also cover strategies for communication with your fellow paddlers, as successful steering relies heavily on teamwork and coordination.

Eric Mitchell is a Master Outrigger Paddler. When it comes to Outrigger paddling few have better credentials. During his 30+ years coaching Eric has taken numerous winning teams to state championships, from High School through to the top ranking men and women’s teams. Over the past 25 years he has medaled in every regatta and race he has entered, he has won: 138 gold medals, 28 silver medals, and 7 bronze medals.
