Canadian Outrigger Distance Championships, Sept. 28 & 29, 2024, Penticton, BC


Join us for the Canadian Outrigger Distance Championships!
September 28 and 29, 2024

Outrigger racing returns to Okanagan Lake (not Skaha Lake).
Saturday OC6 short course of 10-12km and long course of 20-22km.  Both courses will be held on Okanagan Lake. Each race will start in front of the Kiwanis Pier, paddling north towards Summerland and Naramata. Routes will be determined on race day to consider real time wind and weather conditions.
Sunday Small Boats includes a short course followed by an afternoon downwind (approx 1:00 pm). 
If the wind doesn’t show up, we will likely hold the full length course a little earlier.

Please note that OC6 Registration closes as of Monday, September 23, 2024 and Small Boat Registration closes as of Thursday, September 26, 2024.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27
4:30 – 6:00 pm – Race Registration (Short Course crews please register Friday) + Social in the Park.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28
7:00 am – 12:00 pm – Race Registration
7:30 am – Steersperson Meeting Short Course
8:00 am – Short Course OC6 Race Start
9:30 am – Pule and Okanagan Welcome
10:00 am – Steersperson Meeting – Women/Mixed Masters
10:30 am – Women/Mixed Masters OC6 Race Start
1:00 pm – Steersperson Meeting – Men/Mixed Open
1:30 pm – Men/Mixed Open OC6 Race Start
4:00 pm – Races Finish – head to the Barking Parrot at the Penticton Lakeside Resort for drinks
4:00 – 5:30 pm – First Meal Seating at the Barking Parrot (Women & Mixed Masters)
5:30 – 7:00 pm – Second Meal Seating at the Barking Parrot (Short Course, Men & Mixed Open)
7:00 pm – Awards at The Barking Parrot
9:00 pm – Awards/Dinner Wraps up

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29
8:00 am – Race Registration/Check-in
9:00 am – Short Course Race Start – Small Boats (V-1, OC-1, OC-2, Surfski) 8-10 km
1:00 pm – Downwind – Mass Start – Small Boats (V-1, OC-1, OC-2, Surfski) 12-16 km Course and length TBD based on wind. Bigger conditions = longer distance. Should there be no wind, the course will be 12 km approx. out and back.
3:00 pm – Awards at Okanagan Lake Park

The downtown race site at Okanagan Lake Park is walkable to a variety of accommodations where you can enjoy the famous Penticton farmers market and a multitude of restaurants and breweries.
Penticton Paddlesports has organized a post-race BBQ Buffet in the Barking Parrot at the Penticton Lakeside Resort and an end-of-day awards ceremony at 7:00pm. See Schedule of Events for details.

  • CORA will be awarding medals to each CORA Cup Series Division Champion at end-of-day Saturday.
  • CORA wishes to extend appreciation to Penticton Paddle Sports Association for supporting the CORA Junior Subsidy Initiative by ensuring registration provides for free entry on Saturday for OC6 Junior crews and on Sunday for small-boat Junior paddlers.
  • CORA wishes to extend appreciation to Penticton Paddle Sports Association for supporting the CORA Junior/Novice OC Paddle Initiative by collecting names of all Saturday/Sunday Junior/Novice participants for the random draw of 8 Junior/Novice OC Paddle Certificates provided by CORA Sponsor Oddball Workshop to recipients at end-of-day Saturday.
  • CORA wishes to extend appreciation to Penticton Paddle Sports Association for supporting the CORA Swag Prizing Initiative by engaging with local vendors to provide random draw prizes though-out the day on Saturday.

Lotus 2024 Poker Paddle

The 2024 Lotus Poker Paddle will be held on Saturday, September 14. This is a fun race in outrigger canoes…with boisterous competition on and off the water! Each team will pick up 4 cards somewhere on the racecourse. These 4 cards will form part of your poker hand; your final card will be dealt at the finish line. Extra cards can be purchased at $5 per card from the dealer. Best poker hand wins…but there are also place prizes for each heat.

All proceeds from this race go to the Lotus Youth Program.

CORA Cup Race #4 – Lotus Iron, July 20, 2024, Burnaby, BC

In 1989, the Lotus Sports Club organized the first outrigger race in Canada, the Lotus Iron Race. The 2024 Lotus Iron Race on July 20, 2024 will not only be the 34th annual Lotus Iron Race, but also the 34th anniversary of outrigger racing in Canada! Be part of Canadian outrigger history!

Race Courses:
Long Course (approximately 20km) – race course will highlight the scenery and many islands in Indian Arm. Actual route will be determined closer to race date in consideration of crews utilizing tides, currents and wind.
Short Course (approximately 12km) – The race course will be determined closer to race date in consideration of safety, weather conditions, tides and currents.

Schedule:
9:00 am – Short Course for crews in all divisions and categories
10:30 am – Long Course for Women’s and Mixed Master 40+, 50+, 60+, and 70+ crews
1:00 pm – Long Course for Men’s and Mixed Open crews
Awards and draw prizes will be presented after each heat.

$270 per crew. Email registration form to LotusIronReg@LotusSports.com
Registration fee waived for Junior or Keiki crews but registration is still required
(CORA is sponsoring Keiki and Junior crews and will cover the registration fee).

All paddlers must pay CORA fees – please pay your annual CORA membership ON-LINE before the race date. Single event fees are also accepted on-line.

Barbecue:
Our celebrated Lotus BBQ will follow each of the heats.

Equipment:
Crews are to supply their own boats and paddling equipment. All boats must have a minimum of six approved PFD’s and two bailing buckets. Spray decks are optional. A limited number of Lotus Sports Club boats will be available to borrow on request (email Race Registrars).
